Earlier this week the prince of Asgard, Thor, was getting prepared to be crowned the next king and now he is banished to the small Midgardian World of earth. How did this happen? Keep reading and get the whole story!
Earlier this week during the pompous young man’s crowning ceremony, deep in the depths of the vaults of the palace, a couple of Frost giants were sneaking in to steal The Casket of Ancient Winters. This relic, if stolen by a frost giant, could unlock the power of infinite winter and destroy anything in its path which would have meant sure destruction for Asgard. Lucky enough, the coronation was interrupted by Odin, sensing something was wrong, got to the Casket just in time to release the destroyer from its state of existential sleep and send the Frost giants running. Thor, thinking rashly, wanted to immediately fight back and destroy the frost giants, but Odin sensed that plan of action was not the best for the peace and prosperity of the nine realms.
Later on that day Thor was livid that he was still not king and that his father Odin would not take his plans and ideas seriously. His brother Loki went to have a chat with him but he didn’t make anything better. Thor then got his companions Loki, Sif, Volstagg, Fandral, and Hogun to go meet the gatekeeper Heimdall. Thor was planning an attack on Jotunheim.
Heimdall, The Gatekeeper of The Bifrost Bridge, was almost too easily convinced by Thor and the others for passage onto Jotunheim. Nevertheless, He opens the breathtaking Bifrost and Thor, his four friends, and his brother were instantly taken to the Frost giant realm of Jotunheim.
There, they were confronted by the king of the frost giants, Laufey. Thor, being the impulsive thinker he is, barged up to Laufey and immediately demanded to know how they had gotten into Asgard. Laufey was quoted with saying “The Odin House is full of traitors.” This got Thor fuming because someone had dared to dishonor his father, his entire realm, and him. Thor turned around and threw his hammer at a frost giant and that began the battle on Jotunheim.
The frost giants pulled out all of the stops. They sent in their biggest weapon, some sort of Frost Beast. The Battle raged on until Odin is sent down from the Bifrost on The 8 legged horse, Sleipnir, Loki’s Son (we’ll save that story for a different issue), and wipes out enough frost giants to get Thor and the others home.
Once they were all back on Asgard Odin sent everyone but Loki and Thor away. Odin is ten quoted saying “you are unworthy of this realm….unworthy of your title…..unworthy of the loved ones you have betrayed.” And then he proceeded to strip Thor of all his power and cast him out to earth. It is rumored Odin gave Thor a chance to regain his power by putting the hammer on earth as well and if Thor can really change and become worthy to possess the power the hammer holds he can return to Asgard.
